Up the Ridge and Breaking Down the Box
California Prison Focus is hosting the showing of two short documentaries focusing on different ways that the American Prison System is failing us - private prisons and solitary confinement.
Up the Ridge:
Up the Ridge explores the alignment of political expedience and human rights abuse that's given rise to the shipping of prisoners from urban areas to distant rural facilities where stark cultural differences can lead to physical abuse and death. Through a series of interviews with the families of inmates and prison and public officials, the filmmakers Nick Szuberla and Amelia Kirby present the stories of those victimized by the perverse economics of our carceral system.

Breaking Down the Box:
Solitary confinement is torture. The film examines the mental health, racial justice and human rights implications of the systemic use of solitary confinement in U.S. prisons. It is a call to action for communities of faith to engage in the growing nationwide movement for restorative alternatives to isolated confinement that prioritize rehabilitation, therapeutic interventions, and recovery.
