Featured speakers:

Erica Guttman, WSU Extension Water Resources, brings over 30 years of experience combining on-the-ground projects with education for a wide range of landowner and professional audiences on topics including shoreline processes, green stormwater infrastructure, sustainable landscaping, and revegetation techniques. She has produced a number of publications and videos to support landowner-stewardship practices, and leads classes for over 2,000 participants annually on topics relating to protecting and conserving water resources and habitat. Her MS is in ecological restoration with a focus on the Puget Sound nearshore. She is certified by the Dept. of Licensing and has been an instructor for Real Estate professionals for over 15 years.

Jim Johannessen runs Coastal Geologic Services Inc., which specializes in beach and estuarine processes, coastal erosion mitigation, coastal restoration, and applied coastal management.  He has designed over 90 implemented soft-shore protection and beach and estuary restoration/enhancement projects, including over 35 bulkhead-removal projects throughout Puget Sound.  Jim has consulted in Puget Sound since 1984 and started CGS in 1993. Jim has a BS in geology and oceanography from Univ. Rhode Island, a MS in geology from Western Washington Univ., and is a Licensed Engineering Geologist in Washington.  Since 1996, Jim has designed and delivered outreach to coastal landowners in every Puget Sound-area county. He has recently created designs for coastal restoration for new beaches at parks in Bellingham and Port Angeles.  Jim was lead author for the 2014 Marine Shoreline Design Guidelines for WDFW and Beaches and Bluffs of Puget Sound white paper for the Puget Sound Nearshore Partnership and the Corps of Engineers.  Marine Park in Bellingham was awarded one of "America's Best Restored Beaches" by the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association in 2009.

Kristen Stavros, Windermere Real Estate: Kristen began her career in adult education in New Zealand, and then specifically chose Whidbey Island as home when she returned to the States to settle down. Her work locally with WSU Extension and then regionally with the Puget Sound Partnership (PSP), has given her over a decade of regionally-specific environmental experience. As the Education & Outreach Manager for PSP, it was her responsibility to connect the most up-to-date scientific information with education/outreach professionals  around Puget Sound to make the  biggest impact in protecting this key resource.  Her passion to arm people with the most critical information and effective ways to use that information persists in her new career as a broker with Windermere Real Estate. During the workshop, Kristen will help "connect the dots" to enable brokers and appraisers to better serve their clients by most effectively utilizing the scientific information presented.
