The Latin Roots of American History / Las raices españolas de nuestra historia -- Dick Miller
The study of American history typically begins with British Jamestown and Plymouth, and from there marches inexorably toward the Pacific. We rarely recall that the British were colonial latecomers in the Americas, that the course of our national history moved from south to north long before it moved from east to west, and that California was Hispanic for more than twice as long as it was Anglo.

Felipe Fernandez-Armesto's recent book, Our America: A Hispanic History of the United States, is the first English language overview of  U.S. history from a Latin American Perspective. In this two hour, two session course we will read and discuss Our America. Copies are available in libraries, local bookstores, new and used online, and in Kindle and i-Tunes editions.  Before the first session please read Parts One and Two, and as you do jot down a couple of especially telling passages you'd like to share.

You will come away with new information, fresh insights, and heightened feelings about a story you thought you already knew.

Dick Miller is a retired historian who frequently offers and takes LLCC courses.

Wednesday, December 2 and Thursday, December 17 2015, 10am-12noon  St. Stephens Episcopal Church in SLO.  Please note that the two sessions for this course are on different days of the week.

This is a two session course. Registering for this course by buying a ticket will admit you to both sessions of this course.
