Sun setting too soon, cold, dark, white ground - it's not what everyone in Malden looks forward to. Also true for some who live in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, or Finland. For their days can be even shorter, darker, and colder than in Malden. But for centuries Nordic cultures have captured the beauty of winter in melody, harmony, rhythm, dance, light, and the traditions that wrap it all up like a blanket you wear as you sip warm drink by the fire.
Come, be in that warmth, light, and music with us on December 13th. We have a delightful evening in store - and yes indeed, it will include the traditional Lucia procession - one girl (Lucia) with a wreath of candles on her head followed by young boys and girls in song - bringing hope that though it is dark now, longer days and more sun will come again.
We will offer you songs (and context) from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland - narrated by youth with Scandinavian heritage. These selections, from periods as early as the 1300s to current arrangements of traditional folk tunes, often include instrumental accompaniment.
Harmonies rich, melodies haunting and lyrical, rhythm unexpected at times - you might even walk away wishing for more winter.
A Swedish spread of goodies will follow.

Founded in 1978, Stämbandet (http://stambandet.org) has a reputation for excellence both as an a cappella ensemble and a World Music vocal group. Presenting songs rarely heard outside of Iceland, Norway, Finland, Denmark, and Sweden, this captivating vocal band often breaks into six- and seven- part harmonies sung in six languages. Led by Allen LeVines, musical director since 1985, Stämbandet performs a wide range of a cappella folk traditions unique to Scandinavia, including "trall" - singers imitating fiddlers playing dance music - a practice that has been compared to scat singing.
