A CHRISTMAS FAIRY TALE

A Christmas Fairy Tale One Act
It is a snowy Christmas Eve and Sophie's birthday! Her family has planned a majestic party for her and they are anxiously awaiting for their family and friends to arrive. When the guests appear, they present many beautiful gifts to Sophie: a Spanish and Chinese doll, a shiny flute, a huge bouquet of fragrant flowers, Russian and Arabian gifts. Sophie's Godmother arrives late but with the best gift of all, the Sugar Plum Fairy doll! The party picks up with dancing and celebration. The night grows late and everyone becomes sleepy. The guests generously thank Sophie and her family before they leave.

As Sophie's family retires to bed, she checks on her Sugar Plum Fairy one last time and falls asleep under the Christmas tree with the doll in her arms. At the stroke of midnight Sophie thinks she awakes to a frightening scene, but she is actually dreaming. The house, the tree and the toys appear to be getting larger. Is she shrinking? She grasps her doll tightly. As angels and delightful music hover over their heads, Sophie's Godmother appears as her Fairy Godmother and invites Sophie to dance.

They dance through a snowy forest to the land of fairies where the snowflakes become dancing maidens and flowers sparkle everywhere she looks. Upon their arrival, they are treated like royalty by the Fairy Godmothers friends and presented with every imaginable sweet. Gorgeous dancers in veils move their bodies like rising steam to an Arabian song, and the pretty Chinese dancer uses an umbrella to show an exotic movement. Russian dolls leap and dance to an invigorating Russian dance.

To Sophie's enjoyment there is still more to be seen! A giant Cupcake dances onto the Sugar Plum Fairy's court. Children come out of the cupcake, dancing about and circling around the cupcake while the flowers dance in mesmerizing patterns. Silence quickly follows the end of their dance and Sophie doesn't know what to expect next.

A handsome Cavalier enters the scene and escorts the Sugar Plum Fairy to the center of the room. They dance to the most recognizable song in the entire work. The captivating pair dance lighter than air! This exquisite dance completes Sophie's most perfect evening. The festival concludes when everyone comes together on the court and bids Sophie and her Fairy Godmother farewell. She says she wishes the adventure would never end. Her Fairy Godmother tells her the adventure will never end for those who have an eye to see it.

Sophie wakes up the next morning under the Christmas tree with her Sugar Plum Fairy doll still in her arms and a huge smile on her face!! She has had a most magical birthday celebration and today is Christmas. Merry Christmas to all!!
