Alegrias y lagrimas/Happiness and Tears
CHICAGOPerformances of "Alegrías y lágrimas/Happiness and Tears" begin at 7:30 PM on December 2, at the Cervantes Institute , 31 West Ohio, Chicago, Il . The production runs in a limited engagement through Friday December 11. Performances are Wednesdays and Fridays (December 2, 4, 9, 11) at 7:30 P.M., and Saturday (December 5) at 2 P.M. Tickets are $15, and $10 for students, seniors, and groups of ten or more. The theater is wheelchair accessible and climate-controlled. About the Play Alegrías y lágrimas/Happiness and Tears shows the real lives of Latin American immigrants and refugees, intertwined with dances from their countries of origin, as well as original songs composed especially for the play. It is based on the stories of refugees and immigrants studying at Centro Romero, a non-profit center in Chicago.
Before the show we will offer a tasting of typical foods.
About the Playwright
Judy Veramendi is an author, playwright, and multi-award winning Fulbright scholar from Evanston IL . She has published over thirty books of legends, stories, and poetry, and a novel. She has taught and studied at Northwestern and Columbia College, where she received an MFA in Fiction Writing. She has written seven plays that have been produced in various venues in Chicago, Evanston, Uruguay, and Argentina, since 2003.
Alegrías y lágrimas/Happiness and Tears has been seen in concert performances at Theater Wit, Erie Neighborhood House, Northeastern Illinois University, Raven Theater, and Piven Theater.
Judy Veramendi's first play, The Empty Chalices, has been performed in multiple productions ranging from Uruguay to Buenos Aires to Chicago and, most recently, in association with the Cervantes Institute (2008, 2014). About The Empty Chalices, La Raza said (May 2003):
