This is an Intermediate Training most appropriate for participants who have been working in the mental health and/or addictions field for several years, are certified and needing additional training, and are familiar with the basic concepts of the subject matter.
Goal of Training
This course will build upon foundational principles of the group therapy process specific to populations engaged in the treatment of substance use disorders. The information as it relates to the course objectives will be discussion driven, as well as experiential. Participants will observe and participate in role play exercises in an effort to enhance skills and assist with integration into clinical practice.
The theoretical framework for the class is drawn from the group systems approach described in "The Theory of Practice of Group Psychotherapy" by Irving Yalom and from group practice guidelines described in TIP 41, Substance Abuse Treatment.: Group Therapy. The workshop will emphasize how focusing on "process" rather than "content" in group practice can help patients develop a stronger awareness of self, improve self-management skills and deepen connection to others.
Yalom writes that the fundamental tasks of the group therapist are to:
1. Create and maintain the group
2. Build a group culture
3. Activate and illuminate the here-and-now in therapy

Behavioral Objectives
Participants of this training will be able to:
- Describe the purpose and benefits of group counseling in the treatment of people with substance use disorders,
- Screening for group admission,
- Recognize the difference between content and process in working with group dynamics,
- Describe the characteristics of an effective working group and curative factors of effective group treatment, and
- Identify the stages of growth in the timeline of a group and how to intervene effectively in each of these stages.

Trainers
Anderson Rice, MA, LPC, CADC I, is the Clinical Supervisor at the Kaiser East Interstate Addiction Medicine location. He has over 11 years of experience in the addictions field. Before working in outpatient treatment, he worked in residential treatment settings including Kaiser's Brookside program, Pathways in Columbia County, and DePaul Treatment Centers in Portland. Process groups have been a primary treatment modality throughout his career, and he estimates that he has facilitated several thousand groups throughout his career. Anderson has extensive training in the treatment of trauma through the Somatic Experiencing (SE) Trauma Institute, with this being an area of primary emphasis in his clinical work.
Bob Dobres, LCSW, is a chemical dependency counselor at the Kaiser Permanente East Interstate Clinic, where he co-leads groups in an intensive outpatient program for the Addiction Medicine Department. He has over 15 years' experience providing mental health and addictions counseling for Kaiser Permanente and in private practice, where he sees adults, adolescents and couples. He has completed advanced training in psychodynamic psychotherapy and provides clinical supervision to students and other professionals in the field.
This course has been approved by CDTC,
as a NAADAC Approved Education Provider, for 6 CE. NAADAC Provider #721, CDTC is responsible for all aspect of their programing.
Full attendance is required to receive credit; variable credit for partial attendance may not be awarded.
Please notify CDTC if you are unable to attend training.
- Refund: A refund of the registration cost, not any associated fees, may be given only when notification is given at least 3 days
prior to the training. Notification under 3 days will follow the credit
agreement.
- Credit: If notification is given within 1 week after the training, a credit will be
given for the next training only.
- If CDTC cancels training, registration fees will be refunded in full.
Lunch:There is a one hour lunch break on your own. There is a large cafeteria at the hospital in addition to a smaller cafe and coffee shop with pre-made meals available. Several lunch options are available to the East, past I-205. It is recommended that you check google maps to check for lunch options including Sweet Tomatoes, Chuck's Produce, or fast food restaurants such as Arby's, Taco Bell or Burgerville.
