NYA dedicated its arena to Travis in 1998. Now, 20 years since his accident, NYA is officially retiring the number 00. NYA wants to recognize Roy's contributions to its hockey program as an athlete, and also recognize his character, perseverance, and generosity to others he has displayed over the last 20 years. "Travis embodies everything that NYA hockey players should stand for, and they will be reminded of that every time they are on the ice playing under his banner," said NYA varsity hockey head coach Eric Graham.
Roy was a two-year player for the NYA hockey team and spent countless hours at NYA's rink where his father was the manager. Roy was a dominant force for NYA during his two years as a student athlete before transferring to Tabor Academy. His collegiate career was cut short due to a devastating neck injury he suffered while playing for Boston University. Since the injury, Roy has dedicated his life to helping others through the Travis Roy Foundation, which raises money for medical equipment for those who suffer from spinal injuries.
