An Introduction to Haiku from a North American Perspective
Haiku encapsulates experience into an "aha" moment. It is not about counting syllables. Come to this workshop at LitMore on Saturday, 14 November 2015 from 10:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
A great side benefit of learning haiku is that it teaches us how to get rid of words that aren't necessary. It teaches us how to see what's there, to cut away the adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and words that don't belong so what we're left with is pure poetry.
Award-winning poet, Alexis Rotella, author of 50 books,and former President of the Haiku Society of America and Frogpond editor, will introduce you to haiku from a North American perspective. Her latest book BETWEEN WAVES was released in April by redmoonpress.com.
For years, Alexis Rotella has been widely regarded as one of the most influential haiku poets ever to have written in English. She won the grand prize in the Kusamakura Haiku Contest in 2007 and traveled to Kumamoto, Japan to receive the award. She invented the English-language "psychological haiku", and has been identified with senryu for decades. She is the author of 50 books, and her most recent book, Between Waves, was published in 2014 by Red Moon Press. Alexis's work is widely anthologized in collections and journals including Haiku Mind: 108 Poems to Cultivate Awareness and Open Your Heart, Beneath a Single Moon (Shambala Press), and most recently Creative Writing: An Introduction to Poetry and Fiction (St. Martin's Press). She has served as president of the Haiku Society of America, and has edited Frogpond, the journal of the Haiku Society of America, and founded and edited the senryu journals Brussels Sprout and Prune Juice.
