Veterans Day Tribute to Wartime Wilmington - WWII Heritage Sites Tour
The World War II Wilmington Home Front Heritage Coalition will present a "Veterans Day Tribute to Wartime Wilmington" on Wednesday, November 4. Two events will be offered. The first event takes place that morning with a tour led by Wilbur Jones, Coalition chairman and WWII author and historian. Southeastern North Carolina was a mighty contributor to the U.S. war effort in World War II. Wilmington was called "The Defense Capital of the State" and became the country's unique wartime boomtown. The tour features visits to the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center, the Wilmington shipyard (located in the State Port), Fort Fisher training base, Carolina Beach boardwalk, German POW camps, Medal of Honor Memorials, wartime public housing and neighborhoods, and other museums and structures.
The $40 per person cost of the tour includes the guided tour, driver gratuity, snacks and water on the bus.
Later that evening the second event takes place at the Hannah Block Historic USO Center. From 6:30 to 9:00pm, a WWII USO-type swing dance can be enjoyed with music from the Duke Ladd Orchestra and other wartime-related entertainment by the Thalian Association Community Theater. This event is free and open to the public. A $10 donation is requested. Sign up for this event by contacting Coalition Vice chairman, Jean Lawler at jeanlawler6@gmail.com or 617-4300.
