An American Ascent Screening In Madison
The nation's wild placesfrom national and state parks to national forests, preserves, and wilderness areasbelong to all Americans. But not all of us use these resources equally. Minority populations are much less likely to seek recreation, adventure, and solace in our wilderness areas.
So in 2013 the National Outdoor Leadership School set out to achieve an ambitious goal. This institution of adventure education aimed to put the first team of African-American climbers on the highest peak in North America, the Alaskan mountain called Denali. This wonderful story of modern adventure is beautifully portrayed in the documentary An American Ascent. Presented by Edgewood College this film will be screened on October 17th at 7PM in the Anderson Auditorium.
Tickets are $20 and all proceeds go to support Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail Alliance, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center and a special scholarship for aspiring young adventurers. Madison-based writer and producer James Edward Mills will be on hand to answer questions and to sign copies of his book on Expedition Denali called The Adventure Gap: Changing the Face of the Outdoors.
