Felicia Avalos': The Beast: A Daughter's Document of an Undocumented Journey
Felicia Avalos, MFA candidate at The George Washington University, presents her thesis concert The Beast: A Daughter's Document of an Undocumented Journey. Avalos follows her father's experience of crossing the Mexico and United States border grasping his stories as inspiration for movement. This concert brings to life three of many occupations Raúl Avalos held on his journey to achieving the American dream. "The Beast" takes the viewers through the training in the Mexican army, migrant farming, and the mercury mines of Nevada. Avalos merges different styles of movement with modern dance such as: Muay Thai boxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Argentine tango, and Mexican ballet folklórico. Guest Mariachi performer, Adelina Longoria will also be performing alongside Avalos. See below for her bio:
Member of a multigenerational mariachi family, Adelina has been singing mariachi music since uttering her first words. Passionate about music that celebrates culture and life, Adelina sings both mariachi and contemporary Christian music. She also plays guitar, and occasionally can be found playing around town with Mariachi Los Amigos. On Sundays, she leads worship with La Red Band at the Gala Theatre. A long time coming, Longoria is currently working on her first solo record project. She has also been a guest artist on several albums for Mariachi Imperial de America, where she has recorded songs in Spanish, English, Mandarin, and Armenian and will be featured as a guest artist on their upcoming album. Adelina is a recent graduate of Instituto CanZion music school and studies voice under Juan Carlos Rodriguez. By day Adelina is an Associate at Booz Allen Hamilton and Adjunct Professor at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
