CULINARY HISTORIANS OF NEW YORK PRESENTS

"The Culinary World of a Literary Icon: Zora Neale Hurston" with Frederick Douglass Opie

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

The American folklorist and Harlem Renaissance author Zora Neale Hurston is best known for her masterwork, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and less known for her important anthropological work, including extensive ethnographic research on African American influences on the food in her home state of Florida.

Frederick Douglass Opie, author of Zora Neale Hurston on Florida Food will describe Hurston's culinary research, work which is still a primary resource for food historians. He'll describe Hurston's role in our understanding of African American influenced foods like chicken pancakes, fried turtle and pickled pig's feet, as well as many home remedies like parched rice and bay leaves for an upset stomach and recipes to cure "loss of mind."

A reception featuring African-American-influenced Floridian foods will precede the talk.

Frederick Douglass Opie is a faculty member in the History and Society Division at Babson College. He is the author of Hog and Hominy: Soul Food from Africa to America, and teaches African-American History and Foodways, and Food in the African-American Canon. Dr. Opie blogs at Food As A Lens.
