Not So SIlent Cinema presents "Nosferatu"
This classic, post WWI silent movie made in Germany is characteristic of the German Expressionist period. Pianist/composer Brendan Cooney and his ensemble perform a live original score that mixes klezmer devices, gypsy grooves, avant-garde textures, and classic horror-film camp, evoking both the musical moods of Transylvania and of the German Expressionist milieu from which the film comes. The live performance brings together a diverse crew of musical minds, seasoned players with deep roots in the Klezmer, Balkan, Classical, Tango, Jazz, Classical and Experimental scenes in Philadelphia.
Though Nosferatu is a dark film, full of themes of madness, tingling with suspense, the dated nature of the cinematography and storytelling also give it a major dose of horror camp. At some performances of the film audiences have sat chilled watching Count Orlok emerge from the bowels of the ship while other audiences have cracked-up laughing. It is quite an entertaining film for this reason. At one moment you can truly put yourself in the chair of a 1922 German film-goer experiencing the horror of such a film for the first time. At the next moment you are doubled over, snickering at a line like "Is that your wife? What a lovely neck?" This is how a good horror film should be.
