Tannahill Weavers in Concert at Willits Community Theatre
The Tannahill Weavers, one of Scotland's premier traditional bands, will perform at the Willits Community Theatre on Sunday, October 18 at 7pm. The famed quartet plays a diverse repertoire of Celtic specialities, including fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, and original ballads and lullabies. Since their first visit to the United States in 1981, the band has played to increasingly large audiences across several continents and recently been touted as among the most exhilarating of the classical Celtic bands. Garrison Keillor, the host of "Prairie Home Companion", once remarked, "These guys are a bunch of heroes every time they go on tour in the States."
The band is comprised of Roy Gullane on lead vocals and guitar, Phil Smillie on flute, bodhran and whistles, John Martin on fiddle, cello and viola, and on pipes, the award-winning Lorne MacDougall. With a name derived from the legendary Scottish poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the band offers a unique combination of traditional melodies, rich vocals and rhythmic accompaniment that demonstrates the centuries-old and varied musical heritage of the Celtic people. They have released nearly 20 albums, including their third, The Tannahill Weavers, which won the Scotstar Award for Folk Record of the Year. The Tannahill Weavers turn their acoustic excitement loose on audiences with an electrifying effect. Their one-time show at WCT offers a rare opportunity for patrons to enjoy the music that may be old time Celtic but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock and roll.
