Soli Deo Gloria

Central City Chorus, directed by Phillip Cheah, opens its 35th season with "Soli Deo Gloria," a performance of the monumental Mass in B minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will be held at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on West 87th Street between Broadway and West End Avenue in Manhattan on Saturday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m. Joining the Chorus are musical guests sopranos Sarah Brailey and Kathleen Cantrell, mezzo-soprano Catherine Hedberg, tenor Chris Carter, and bass Dan Moore, with the internationally acclaimed REBEL Baroque Ensemble.

In celebration of the Chorus' 35th anniversary, the theme for the season is that of journeys, looking at how far the Chorus has come and celebrating its future. The Mass in B minor was one of Bach's final works and served as a summation not only of Bach's compositional output but also of the Baroque period as well. Bach's singular synthesis of music and theology yields a work of unparalleled wonder and beauty. The Chorus' foundational repertoire was built upon the works of Bach, Purcell, Mozart, and other classical masters so the Mass also plays a significant role for the Chorus in recalling its performance history and tradition.
