La Vida Vence a La Muerte
The La Peña Community Chorus is proud to present a performance of this cantata written by Fernando Torres and Leonardo Cereceda.

The cantata commemorates one of the most heinous crimes committed by the Pinochet dictatorship in Chile in 1986: the burning of two young demonstrators.
The cantata is a testament to the ability of the human spirit to overcome terrible treachery, told through beautiful poetry and song.

The Chorus will also be singing other songs related to the coup and the years of dictatorship, written by Chilean composers Victor Jara, Rafael Manriquez and many others.

Saturday, October 17, 2015 8:00 PM
St. John's Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue, Berkeley
$20/$17 Seniors and Students, available in advance at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door.

More about "La Vida Vence a La Muerte"
The two young demonstrators burned alive by the Chilean military during a 1986 demonstration were Rodrigo Rojas de Negri and Carmen Gloria Quintana. Rodrigo died from his injuries, but Carmen survived. Severely disfigured by the burns, Carmen later submitted herself to dozens of surgical procedures. She went on to work tirelessly for justice and human rights. While the Chilean military succeeded for decades in covering up the crime, the perpetrators were finally brought to justice after the case was reopened in 2015 (http://nyti.ms/1UOxmRr).

About La Peña Community Chorus
The La Peña Community Chorus has been singing songs of peace, justice, and hope since it began in 1978. Started by the Chilean exile community who founded La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley in 1975, the original mission of the Chorus was one of solidarity with the resistance against the dictatorship in Chile. Over the years the focus has expanded to other countries, including the struggles of people in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Mexico, Cuba, and to various labor, community, and women's struggles closer to home.
The Chorus sings songs both unaccompanied and also accompanied by a variety of string, percussion and wind instruments. For more information visit www.LaPenaChorus.org.
