Exploring the Musical Roots of Rio
Dig deep into the musical roots of Rio de Janeiro!
Whether you are new to Brazilian music, or you already have a passion for it, please join us for this exciting event! Rio de Janeiro based percussionist Mila Schiavo and New York based Saxophonist and woodwind artist Laura Dreyer and will present a performance and workshop that will dig deep into the history of the music from Rio de Janeiro. Joining them will be vocalist Débora Watts, and guitarist Itaiguara, both of whom were born and raised in Rio.
The popular music of Rio do Janeiro, which includes Choro, Samba Carioca and Bossa Nova, was created as a result of the growth and expansion of the city. We will explore the history of Samba, influential Brazilian composers, and how Copacabana became one of the most important neighborhoods in Rio. Along with the roots of Bossa Nova, Funk Carioca, Partido Alto, and more, everyone will come away with a more in-depth knowledge of the history and musical roots of Rio de Janeiro, and what makes the music that emerged from this Brazilian city so enchanting!
