Why don't they come? Strategies to increase Latino participation in outreach programs
The Latino community is growing rapidly in the State of Washington and WSU Extension and other professionals are increasingly challenged to reach out to this audience. Any approach to reaching out to Latinos will not be effective without understanding the needs and characteristics of, and the cultural and socio-economic factors connected to the Latino community.  Further, the fastest growing segment of the youth population in Washington is Latino children and youth.  Effective programs and personnel benefit from understanding the unique challenges faced by these families.
Are you prepared to serve the growing Latino community in your region?  Do you have the tools and skills to cross culturally communicate with them?
WSU Extension is offering a two-part training.  In Part 1 participants will learn tools, skills and strategies to work with Latino communities and in Part 2 the focus will be on becoming an ally of Latino families.  You are welcome to register to just one of them, however for the most benefit you are encouraged to take both.
At the end of both parts, you will
Be aware of the diversity and various sub-cultures and languages that make up the Latino/a population
Recognize the demographic makeup of Latinos/as including children and youth
Understand the complexity of immigration issues, including living in mixed status families and how it relates to extension work
Understand the similarities and differences of Latino cultural values to the main stream culture
Identify opportunities, strategies and practices to work with Latino families
Design culturally appropriate programs with Latinos
Be aware of and able to identify points of privilege and inequity that Latino families encounter
