Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents TRI-FI
Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series welcomes back TRI-FI to South Bend! With Matthew Fries on piano, Phil Palombi on bass, and Keith Hall on drums. The bassist, Phil, headlined the International Society of Bassists Convention, this year, with the trio, performing on the original bass of legendary bassist, Scott LaFaro. For ten years TRI-FI has been creating original jazz music, developing a personal style that is contemporary while still deep in the tradition of the classic piano trio  a sound that is fresh and unique but somehow familiar. Downbeat Magazine gives TRI-FI's 5th CD "Staring Into The Sun", 4 Stars..."Tri-Fi's newest collection of originals is the best example yet of their intimate group interplay. Call it a relaxed yet fervent approach to express joy, wonder, surprise. The kind of qualities jazz lovers look for anytime they're hungry for connection."

Pianist Matthew Fries is making waves in the jazz world as both a soloist and accompanist. The winner of the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, his debut album, Song for Today (TCB Music) was named a 2001 critics pick by Jazziz Magazine. As a sideman his work has been described as "the best jazz accompaniment I've seen in a cabaret in years" (The New York Times), and "the crispest rhythm section imaginable" (The London Times). Originally from Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, Matthew now lives and works in New York City. He tours internationally with singer, Curtis Stigers, and performs with a diverse lineup of artists that has included Stacey Kent, DeeDee Bridgewater, Vincent Herring, Steve Wilson, Joel Frahm, Dave Samuels, Claudio Roditi, Terell Stafford, Ann Hampton Callaway and many others.

Grammy award winning bassist Phil Palombi is "one of the most sought after young bass players", according to Steely Dan tenor saxophonist and renowned jazz musician Walt Weiskopf. Author of the Scott LaFaro transcription book, Palombi is moving through the ranks of the New York Jazz elite. His resume now includes recordings and/or performances with Michael Brecker, Billy Hart, Joe Lovano, Dave Liebman, Etta Jones, Maynard Ferguson, Chris Potter, Curtis Stigers, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lew Tabackin, Chucho Valdes, Mark Turner, and The Village Vanguard Orchestra to name a few.

Phil newest CD, entitled RE:Person I Knew - A Tribute to Scott LaFaro, is a 12 track recording that features piano legend Don Friedman and drum great Eliot Zigmund. Phil was granted access to LaFaro's 1925 Prescott bass for the tribute, which makes this a very special recording.

Drummer Keith Hall has established himself as a passionate educator and joyful performer. He spent 12 years touring and recording with singer Curtis Stigers and lived in New York City for 8 years where he also played drums on Broadway's 'Lion King'.  Keith has performed with Billy Drewes, Betty Carter, Wycliffe Gordon, Sir Roland Hanna, Fred Hersch, Joe Lovano, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Phillip Mossman, Janis Siegel, Luciana Souza, Terrell Stafford, Joe Wilder and Steve Wilson. Keith presents his educational programs to students of all ages and he is the director of the Keith Hall Summer Drum Intensive.  He is the Jazz Drum Set Professor at Western Michigan University and the author of Jazz Drums Now! Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.  "Hall has a nimble, grooving, 'melodic' touch, and knows how to tell a story." (Modern Drummer Magazine).
