Airship Laboratories presents an afternoon Sitar and Tabla concert of classical raagas in its beautiful live studio environment.

Arjun Verma and Indranil Mallick join forces for the first time in the Bay Area to perform a set of powerful and evocative afternoon melodies with the spontaneous rhythmic interaction characteristic of North Indian Classical Music.

The concert will feature a live performance room as well as an overflow listening room for families.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

ARJUN VERMA is an internationally-performed sitarist trained by the legendary Maestro Ali Akbar Khan.

Arjun has spent his entire life steeped in the tradition of North Indian Classical music.  The son of sitarist Roop Verma, a disciple of Maestros Ali Akbar Khan and Ravi Shankar, Arjun began learning sitar from his father at age five.  As a teenager, Arjun was fortunate to study directly with Maestro Ali Akbar Khan for eight years, and since the Maestro's death, with his son Alam Khan. Arjun has also received guidance from Smt. Annapurna Devi.

Arjun's playing is based on the musical approach of Maestro Ali Akbar Khan.  Arjun has developed innovative sitar techniques inspired by the Maestro's style, and is also deeply influenced by sitarist Nikhil Banerjee. The combination of these influences results in a style encompassing the deeply contemplative as well as the exhilarating aspects of Indian Music.

Arjun has performed with renowned musicians in many genres including Alam Khan, Bob Weir, Pandit Sharda Sahai, Ustad Shabbir Nisar, Fareed Haque, Kai Eckhardt, Maya Kherani, and Salar Nader.
Arjun has performed in the United States, Europe, and India, including noteworthy performances with Houston Grand Opera, and at Prague Castle, Pattee Arena, the Fillmore, and at the United Nations in Geneva.

In addition to performing, Arjun teaches at the Ali Akbar College of Music and the California Jazz Conservatory.
