Become a Reimagine PHX Guru! This is a monthly series of sustainability workshops put on by Keep Phoenix Beautiful and City of Phoenix Public Works. This comprehensive workshop series designed to educate community members about sustainable living strategies. Our mission is to engage citizens in learning about sustainable practices and applying that knowledge in the community. In addition to using this information in their everyday lives, Gurus would facilitate neighborhood meetings, work at community events, and develop other opportuni-ties to utilize their skills and knowledge for the betterment of the community.
Learn how to make and use your own safe and practical garden alternatives!
Class topic details:
*Learn and share recipes for homemade lawn/garden products. *Discuss the pros and cons of organic vs conventional gardening/landscaping *Discuss the regulations (or lack of) for wording such as "natural" "organic" "green", etc. *Discuss what ingredients should be avoided in products and why. * Discuss the difference between store bought fertilizers, soil, and composted material o Additives, good or bad? o Chemical makeup of fertilizers o Derivatives of chemicals (natural vs. mined and what to look for to be purchase more sustainable products) o Touch on registration of chemicals (pH) *Discuss the pros and cons of organic vs conventional gardening/landscaping *Discuss how these chemicals transition into food, the earth, etc. *Discuss the process of composting (three bin, throw as you go, bokashi, vermicomposting, etc.) *Discuss City of Phoenix composting options and future plans
