Music for a Masterpiece
Violinists Steven Copes and Erin Keefe, violist Maiya Papach, cellist Anthony Ross, and clarinetist Osmo Vänskä present an unforgettable evening of chamber music to raise funds for the restoration and preservation of Christ Church Lutheran. Proceeds from the concert will be used in such projects as providing handicapped accessibility, foundation repair, and courtyard repair and redesign. These projects and others will preserve this National Historic Landmark for generations to come.

About Christ Church Lutheran:
In 1948, Pastor William Buege commissioned renowned Finnish-American architect Eliel Saarinen to design Christ Church Lutheran in Minneapolis's Longfellow neighborhood. Saarinen, designer of the Helsinki Railway Station, architect, and director of the Cranbrook Educational Community in Ann Arbor, produced a masterwork. The architectural press lauded Christ Church as embracing modern principles while eschewing historical styles. It was and is widely considered to be the building that heralded a new form of ecclesiastic architecture.
Four years after Eliel Saarinen's death in 1950, the congregation approached his son, Eero, to design a complementary Education Wing. He collaborated with Glen Paulsen, AIA, in crafting an elegant and deferential addition. Completed in 1962, the same year as his exuberant Dulles Airport and TWA Flight Center, the Education Wing houses the Luther Lounge, sky-lit atrium, spacious education rooms, library, industrial-scale kitchen, and a gymnasium/theatre.

Sergei Prokofiev's Sonata in C Major for two violins, Opus 56

Composed by a Russian composer known for his grand scale works for the ballet, screen and orchestral performances, Sergei Prokofiev took time in 1932 to write a 14-minute piece for two violins. This four-movement work interweaves the sounds of two solo instruments in ways that astound. And you'll have the pleasure of hearing a performance by two virtuoso concertmasters Copes from the SPCO and Keefe from Minnesota Orchestra.
Bernhard Crusell's Clarinet Quartet

Bernhard Crusell was born in Finland in 1775. Although he spent most of the rest of his life in Sweden, he always considered himself a Finn. He studied clarinet in Stockholm, and was well known as a clarinet soloist. Crusell was also a skillful composer, and wrote numerous chamber works and concerti for performance by himself or his friends and colleagues. Clarinet quartets- scored for clarinet and string trio- were popular in the early 19th century, and these pieces reflect the influence of Mozart, and the advancing Romantic era.
Brahms' Clarinet Quintet in b minor, Opus 115

At the age of 57, Johannes Brahms decided to end his long and fruitful career as a composer in 1890. Then he heard Richard Muhlfeld, a clarinetist with the Meiningen orchestra. Brahms declared Muhlfeld the greatest woodwind player he had ever heard, and then spent the summer of 1891 writing chamber music for him. Filled with warm and luscious Brahmsian melodies and harmonies this four movement work will hold you spellbound.
