Music of Paraguay
The "South of the Border: Traditions" series   a collaboration between the Minnesota Global Arts Institute and Hamline University   wraps up this year with Nicolas Carter with Son de Sur: Harp Music of Paraguay and Latin America from October 9-11. These events will be the first Minnesota concerts in over a year for Nicholas Carter and Son del Sur.

Nicolas Carter was raised in Paraguay where he learned to play the national folk instrument, the Paraguayan harp. This unique instrument is based on the 16th century Spanish harp, but with its own distinctive style and sound. Nicolas began playing at age ten, learning from maestro Isidro Caballero, a master harpist who travelled extensively throughout the world and father of Nicolas Caballero, one of the world's most accomplished and famous Paraguayan harpists.

Nicolas began as a professional musician at age 18, playing all over the world including the United States, Europe and South America, and recording a dozen albums. He simultaneously developed his talents as a theatre artist and educator. He finds inspiration for his original compositions from observations of nature and in precious moments of everyday life. His performances integrate harp music with these observations and reflections on culture, often with a hint of humor, to create a warm and inviting experience for audiences.

Son del Sur (meaning "Song from the South") delights audiences with their unique combination of Latin American traditional and contemporary music. They offer an extensive repertoire of traditional and contemporary Latin American music and world music rhythms, as well as their original compositions incorporating instruments and rhythms from throughout South America. Son del Sur celebrates their cultural heritage through music, fusing the dynamic rhythms of Latin America to celebrate through the rich diversity and blending of cultures.

Son del Sur began performing together at a trio in the early 1990s, incorporating sounds and rhythms from throughout Latin America. They are influenced by the musical icons from each of their native countries, as well as popular Latin American music groups. Their repertoire is comprised of Mexican mariachi music, Colombian cumbias, Paraguayan polkas, Venezuelan joropos, Andean huaynos, romantic ballads, and more. Their first two albums Arriba la Fiesta and Ecos del Alma, showcased traditional favorites from Latin America.

Today, both Carter and Son del Sur perform sophisticated original compositions and arrangements, as well as their vast repertoire of traditional Latin American folk music. Son del Sur founding musicians Nicolas Carter (harp) and Mauricio Sanchez (guitar, charango, Andean flutes) are the core artists, joined in this concert by Michael Bissonnette (Percussion) and Dan Arlig (acoustic bass).

The main concert will be held at Sundin Music Hall, Hamline University, 1531 Hewitt Avenue, Saint Paul, MN on Friday, October 9 at 7:30 (free, informative pre-show lecture-demonstration at 7:00). Tickets are by general admission, $12 for adults, $8 for students, and $5 for the Hamline/ACTC community. Seating is limited, and advance tickets are available through http://paraguaymusic.bpt.me or by calling 651-523-2459. Free parking is widely available in campus lots.

Musical collaborations continue at the FREE "La Peña," a gathering of musicians with the public, featuring casual performances, traditional "maté" tea, and snacks. La Peña will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, October 11 at the Bush Center Hub (basement level) and is free of charge. The residency also includes public workshops, lectures, and a collaboration with Hamline Elementary School.
