Maier Hall Concert Series: Caballito Negro
The winter Maier Hall concert, February 23, 2016, brings the flute and percussion duo, Caballito Negro to Port Angeles from southern Oregon. The duo's website states, "Flutist Tessa Brinckman and percussionist Terry Longshore perform intercultural work, in a fearless, ecstatic blend of modern and traditional aesthetics. Inspired by Federico García Lorca's poem, 'Canción de Jinete (1860)', the duo collaborates with many prominent, innovative artists, creating contemporary music that pushes the flute and percussion repertoire to new heights,  and always in the spirit of duende."

New Zealand flutist Brinckman has been described by critics as a "flutist of chameleon-like gifts" and "virtuoso elegance" (Gramophone). She enjoys a versatile career, having worked in many classical music ensembles and concert series in the United States, South Africa and New Zealand. Her orchestral and festival work includes the Oregon Symphony, New Haven International Arts, Oregon Bach, Oregon Shakespeare, Ernest Bloch, Bumbershoot and Astoria Music Festivals.

In demand as a collaborator, performing on flute, piccolo, alto, contrabass and baroque flutes, Ms. Brinckman currently works with contemporary flute/percussion duo Caballito Negro, with master koto-player, Mitsuki Dazai, and a forthcoming new baroque ensemble, Next World Collective.

"Percussionist Terry Longshore's genre-crossing work balances the artisty of the concert stage with the spontaneity of jazz and the energy of a rock club," Jones said. "Dr. Longshore brings a dynamic voice to every musical encounter." He has performed throughout the world, from venues in the Americas and Europe to flash mobs in Amsterdam.  In addition to Caballito Negro, Dr. Longshore performs with the percussion group Compás, which he also directs, Dúo Flamenco, Skin & Bones, and red fish blue fish.  Other performances have taken him onstage with the Bang on a Can Festival(NYC), the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Cabrillo Music Festival (CA), and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.  He can be heard on numerous CD and motion picture recordings and has, taught percussion at Southern Oregon University for many years.

Although Caballito Negro's program is not yet known, Jones says it will likely include a piece they have often performed by Jones himself, entitled "Music for South Africa".

Online ticket sales are now closed. You may purchase your ticket(s) in person at door. Enjoy the show!
