The Surrealist Cabaret at the Clark Commons, Barnard VT
The Royal Frog Ballet, an arts collective from western Massachusetts is bringing their annual Surrealist Cabaret to collaborate on theatrical field magic with the story loving farmers at Fable Farm. The event walks the audience through the hilly but gorgeous farm landscape at autumnal sunset. Along the way they encounter a surreal collection of short stories, dance, installation pieces, and roving characters that explore and celebrate themes of season, place, and what it means to be human in these times. Each evening's performance will close with a fire and cider, congregating audience members and characters to share in the delight of the land they walk on.

What started eight years ago in Amherst, MA as an outdoor open studio for a group of friends to show works-in-progress, The Surrealist Cabaret has turned into a wild celebration of season, landscape, death and regrowth, spirits, stories, poetry, and community, featuring artists from across the county. The event delights and befuddles with its volley of drumming skeletons, illuminated poetry, moving sculptures, sequined parades, saints, stilters, puppet shows, musicians, and more!  Immersed in the landscape, the characters and stories ooze out of the woods and fields as if they are always there, tucked just under the layer of our everyday routines. It is magical, luminescent, and just a dash of spooky.

For this collective that specializes in blending ritual and humor to create a wacky brand of conceptual folk art built for fields, puddles and woodlands, the partnering with Fable Farm is a dream come true. Brothers Christopher and Jon Piana, who started Fable Farm, view their work as farmers as not only growing food for the community, but creating space for others to share stories and connect with one another and the landscape.  Fable Farm, started in 2008, was named for the power of story and theirs is an evolving story.  What began as informal concerts in the backyard of their farmhouse at their CSA vegetable pick-ups has evolved over the years into what is now a concert series at Feast and Field Market in collaboration with a collective of other local farmers and BarnArts, a local arts nonprofit.  The brothers' vision to create a farm theatre came to fruition in 2012 and 2013, when along with farm intern and professional actor Andrew White,  they introduced theatre to the farm, and produced Seamarks, and Crimes of the Heart which were met with critical acclaim.
