Brazilian Jazz: Max Hatt Edda Glass with Clipper Anderson
"The Max Hatt / Edda Glass Quartet with Clipper Anderson and Brad Boal features Bossa Nova, Jazz, and their genre-defying and award-winning original material. The quartet comes to Tula's as part of Max Hatt / Edda Glass's album-release tour, which takes them from Montana (opening for Romero Lubambo and Dweezil Zappa) to the East Coast to play at Lincoln Center, NYC, and NPR's Mountain Stage. Anderson joins the tour for eight shows, adding his virtuosic bass lines to Hatt's melodic compositions, and Glass's lyrics and unmistakable voice.
The quartet also draws on the American West for inspiration, which turns out to be no surprise. Anderson grew up in Polson, MT, while Max Hatt / Edda Glass honed their intimate sound playing in Montana's only Bossa Nova band. "Bossa is so minimal and unaffected," says Glass. "It's complex and tricky, but it sounds as easy and natural as humans whispering to one another." Glass's carioca-accented Portuguese and their extensive repertoire speaks to a long and abiding love affair with the Brazilian genre. Yet the influence lingers longer than mere tropical flavor -- even when singing about Little Big Horn or winter in Glendive, MT, her elastic phrasing gives a grateful nod to João Gilberto. Likewise Hatt's melancholic, sophisticated melodies owe a debt to Antonio Carlos Jobim. "The common thread,"" says Glass, ""is that it's all intimate, conversational music. And it's music that evokes a world, whether it's the beaches of 1960s Rio, or the Great Plains rolling out for miles.""

After playing Bossa Nova in Montana for 10 years, Max Hatt / Edda Glass emerged with their original music to win grand-prize at the 2014 NewSong Competition at Lincoln Center, NYC. ""Max Hatt/Edda Glass often defied categorization,"" said Gar Ragland, the contest's director, calling them, ""arguably the most distinctive finalist act let alone winner we've ever had." Last winter they played officially at the 2015 Sundance Film Fest, where the editor of ASCAP's Playback Magazine described their sets as ""mesmerizing cinematic folk jazz."" Max Hatt / Edda Glass began with a generous grant from the Myrna Loy Center in Helena, MT. Their Bossa Nova group, Rio, was featured on MT-PBS's Emmy-award winning show, 11th & Grant.

Bassist Clipper Anderson is a musician who defies labels. He is a virtuosic improviser, known for creating intelligent lines, which are often executed with stunning speed and precision. Earshot Jazz has aptly described Clipper as " a player for the connoisseur to savor," and rightly so. He has recorded five albums with Seattle's Greta Matassa, and played with a long list of jazz greats including Michael Brecker, Arturo Sandoval, Dave Samuels, Peter Erskine, Bruce Forman, Tamir Hendelman, Bob Mintzer, Lew Soloff, Bucky Pizzarelli, Benny Golson, Paquito D'Rivera, Phil Woods and Buddy DeFranco.
