THE BACCHAE/THE SISTERS OF SEMELE
Queens Shakespeare in partnership with What Dreams May Co. presents
THE BACCHAE/THE SISTERS OF SEMELE
BY EURIPIDES/CHRIS RIVERA
Directed By Christina Sheehan
Stage Manager Bloo Rodriquez

"The Son of Zeus is back in Thebes."

After receiving praise from audiences and critics alike for their smash hit productions of Much Ado about Nothing and Romeo & Juliet in 2014, Queens Shakespeare in partnership with What Dreams May Co brings audiences part 2 of its 2015 Season with a controversial, brutal, modern re-imagining of the classical theatre's most horrifying yet soul searching work. Join us as we shine the looking glass on men worshiped as gods, vengeful gods walking amongst men, and the destructive might of men turned mob. Next up: Euripides' The Bacchae.

Director Christina Sheehan (Director of 2013's critically acclaimed Macbeth) brings audiences back to a ravaged world always on the brink of chaos. Featuring a modern one-act prequel to The Bacchae, The Sisters of Semele by Chris Rivera and set in the same post-apocalyptic universe explored in Julius Caesar, we now Journey to the land of Thebes. A young king is newly come into his rule and a young demigod has newly come into his power. The conflict between these two cousins pitting man VS Maenad, and force VS faith, is at its core two boys throwing a tantrum in trying to prove themselves to the world and to their families. When such squabbles occur between gods and kings the stakes become dangerous, the consequences become deadly.

Classics for a Cause: Every Thursday & Saturday at 10:00PM after the performance of The Bacchae will be a special benefit production of Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead by Bert V. Royal. 50% of all proceeds will benefit The Trevor Project, the leading national organization focused on suicide prevention efforts among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning and other queer youth.
