Beekeeping 101 Class

The Ashland Beekeepers Association (Virginia) is holding its annual fall beekeeping class for those interested in getting started in beekeeping. The class allows newcomers to make more intelligent decisions about the direction they wish to take; and gives them ample time to obtain the gear, equipment, and to pre-order bees for delivery the following spring. The all-day class (which includes lunch) will begin by covering the social order, life cycle and job functions of the honey bee. From there, the class goes into the different ways to obtain bees, where best to place them on your property, and how to install them into your new equipment. The class continues by displaying the necessary gear and equipment, and demos how to use it. Once your bees are in place, the biggest hurdle is how to monitor and manage them as the seasons progress. The class takes the new beekeeper through the first year's management and hopefully gives them the best chance possible for a surviving colony the following spring. Finally, the class will cover the various problems the beekeeper might encounter with pests, disease, pesticides, and other issues. Check-in: 8:30 a.m. Class starts: 9:00 a.m. Class ends: 4:00 p.m.

Beekeeping Basics - a book published by Penn State University will be available at the class for the nominal fee of only $5.00 (cash only please). This book is not required nor needed for the class, but is only being made available at this great discount as a courtesy.

Lunch will include a 6" turkey or ham sub (make your choice when you register here), potato salad, pasta salad, cookie tray. (No discount if lunch is not desired.) Coffee, tea, and water is included in registration fee and will be available all day.

Ashland Coffee and Tea is located at 100 N. Railroad Ave, Ashland, VA 23005. Parking is available immediately behind the building. Also there is a free public parking lot a block south on Railroad Ave. See map.
