Celtic Christianity's Inspiration for a Post-9/11 world
Anglican priest and scholar Herbert O'Driscoll will reflect on the spiritual power of early Celtic Christians during a time of crisis.
"There was a people before us who moved through and lived out a 9/11 experience. One of that generation was a spiritual giant named Patrick in whose lifetime thedefences of Rome were pierced by a Gothic army for the first time in centuries, bringing the Western Roman empire to its knees, and with it four centuries of Christian faith embedded in an imperial system. Yet between the mid 5th century and the late 7th century Patrick's generation andthose who followed brought into being in the Atlantic islands a Christian recoverythat shines today across fifteen centuries and which we today call Celtic Christianity. An evening is not enough for the magnificence of their achievement, yet an eveningis sufficient for us to realize something all important for us. We are the inheritors of that achievement in a remarkably similar moment of history."
A native of Ireland, O'Driscoll is an Anglican priest and renowned storyteller and scholar of Celtic Christianity. By turns a teacher, speaker, broadcaster, hymnist, and author, he now lives in Victoria, British Columbia. Recognized as the best known and one of the most highly regarded preachers in the Anglican Church, Dr. O'Driscoll is a former urban Cathedral Dean in Vancouver, B.C., and former Warden of the College of Preachers, Washington National Cathedral. He is the celebrated author of 30 books, including A Doorway in Time, a reflection of his own Celtic spirituality, and Emmanuel, written while in the Holy Land.
