Concert: Mozart Requiem and Bruckner Te Deum
The Choral Society of Durham, the Durham School of the Arts, and the Durham Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Rodney Wynkoop and Maestro William Henry Curry present Mozart's Requiem and Bruckner's Te Deum.
Students from the Durham School of the Arts join the Choral Society and the Durham Symphony Orchestra in performing Mozart's final work, his Requiem. Mozart was ill when he began the work and died before finishing it. Completed by Mozart's student Franz Xaver Süssmayr, the Requiem took its place as a beloved masterpiece of choral literature. Our concert opens with the Choral Society's first performance of Anton Bruckner's Te Deum in nearly 60 years. Bruckner's grand, powerful setting of the medieval hymn of praise and thanksgiving was the composer's favorite of his own works he called it "the pride of my life." Gustav Mahler claimed that it was written not for mortal singers, but "for the tongues of angels, heaven-blest, chastened hearts, and souls purified in the fire."
