Choral Society of Durham Concert: Rachmaninoff All Night Vigil
The Choral Society of Durham under the direction of Rodney Wynkoop presents Rachmaninoff's All Night Vigil.
Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear the All-Night Vigil (commonly called the Vespers) presented complete and in the original Church Slavonic. The text is from a Russian Orthodox vigil service traditionally held the night before liturgical feast days. Though most of the work's fifteen canticles are based on ancient Orthodox chant melodies, Rachmaninoff captures their spirit in a rich harmonic texture, and he exploits the full dynamic range of the unaccompanied choir, from hushed awe to outbursts of exultation.
