Choral Society of Durham Concert: Honegger King David
The Choral Society of Durham Chamber Choir under the direction of Rodney Wynkoop presents Honegger's King David.
King David (Le Roi David) was the first big hit for twentieth-century French-Swiss composer Arthur Honegger. It originated as incidental music for a play, but was so successful that Honegger created a concert version, scored for soloists, chorus, and a chamber orchestra of mainly winds and percussion, including piano, organ, and celesta. In this dramatic work, narrators recount the major events of David's life from the Old Testament, and the chorus and soloists respond in 27 musical episodes that theatrically interpret the varied settings and emotions of the story, from tender and lyrical to rousing and grand.
