National Lutheran Choir: The Minnesota Tradition (Northfield)
Culminating the choir's 30th Anniversary Season is a program that celebrates and honors the tradition of choral music in Minnesota: past, present and future. F. Melius Christiansen, founder of the world renowned St. Olaf Choir, has been called the father of the Midwest a capella choir tradition. His music remains a staple in choral literature and inspired many composers from Lutheran colleges throughout the Midwest. His two sons, Olaf C. Christiansen and Paul J. Christiansen, continued the tradition, and others, such as Leland Sateren, Kenneth Jennings, René Clausen, Larry Fleming and David Cherwien (Artistic Director of the NLC) have also contributed compositions to this tradition and will be represented in this concert. In the spirit of continuing the tradition into the future, the NLC has commissioned St. Olaf graduate, Ralph Johnson, to compose a new work commemorating the choir's 30 years of singing, which will be performed for the first time during these concerts.
