Author Kirby Larson in Puyallup
Here's your chance to meet Newbery Honor author Kirby Larson (Dash, The Fences Between Us, Hattie Big Sky.) Books will be available for purchase at the event, and the author will be available for book signing after speaking.
Dash is the moving story of a Japanese-American girl who is separated from her dog upon being sent to Camp Harmony, the internment camp in Puyallup during WWII. This is a novel about survival, endurance, and moral obligations during wartime, a recurrent theme throughout the 2015 Puyallup Festival of Books. In 2015, Dash won the Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction Prize.
Kirby Larson is the acclaimed author of the 2007 Newbery Honor Book, Hattie Big Sky, a young adult historical novel she wrote inspired by her great-grandmother, Hattie Inez Brooks Wright, who homesteaded by herself in eastern Montana as a young woman. That book, and encouragement from her mentor, Karen Cushman, gave Kirby the confidence to embrace her passion for historical fiction; in 2015, her book Dash won the Scott O'Dell Historical Fiction Prize. In 2006, Kirby began a collaboration with her good friend, Mary Nethery, which has produced two award-winning nonfiction picture books: Two Bobbies: A True Story of Hurricane Katrina, Friendship and Survival (illustrated by Jean Cassels) and Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine and a Miracle. She has also written Duke, The Fences Between Us (Dear America series), Hattie Ever After (the sequel to Hattie Big Sky), The Friendship Doll and others.
