Shavuot: Walking the Omer Path

Friday, June 10, 4:30pm - Sunday, June 12, 12:00pm

The 49 days between Passover and Shavuot are called "The Counting of the Omer." These are the seven weeks from our liberation from slavery in Egypt at Passover until we arrive at Mount Sinai on Shavuot to receive the Torah. The Passover Haggadah describes this as the journey "from despair to joy, from mourning to celebration, from darkness to great light, from oppression to redemption." Hopefully we transform from a condition of disconnection to a state of wholeness in which we can be present for the revelation of the Divine Presence.

The Jewish mystical tradition incorporates the sefirot, the divine attributes that make up the Tree of Life, into the Omer journey. The trip to Mount Sinai becomes a metaphor for our own path toward the light. We ascend the holy mountain by incorporating the divine attributes into our own being: love, power, balance, perseverance, beauty, and self-control.

This Shavuot we are going to inaugurate the new Omer Path that graces our grounds. We will study the kabbalistic sefirot and their meanings, and we will walk the Omer Path, physically enacting the spiritual journey we are taking to Mount Sinai, and discovering where that path brings each of us. We will spend rich time outdoors awakening to the beauty of the season. We will engage in Tikkun Leyl Shavuot, immersing ourselves in Torah study on the eve of the festival, and we will welcome the sunrise with prayer. Join us and nourish your mind and spirit during this powerful Jewish holiday.
