4:30pm, Friday, December 11- 2pm Sunday, December 13
George and Ira Gershwin. Richard Rodgers. Jerome Kern. Oscar Hammerstein II. Lorenz Hart. Irving Berlin. Yip Harburg. Harold Arlen. Dorothy Fields. Betty Comden. Adolf Green. Cole Porter. In the 1930's and 40's, the creators of the uniquely American genre of musical theater were all Jewish.
Well, not Cole Porter! But the list goes on: Leonard Bernstein. Alan Jay Lerner. Frederick Loewe. Sheldon Harnick. Jerry Bock. Jerry Herman. Jule Styne. Frank Loesser. John Kander. Fred Ebb. Stephen Sondheim. Richard Adler. Jerry Ross. And many more. These immigrants and children of immigrants gave us a body of music that arises from our common Jewish teachings and traditions and soars right into our hearts with wisdom, insight, and humor. They created songs that form a large piece of the cultural DNA of 20th century America. And what great music!
Come sing your hearts out and lift your spirits for a great weekend with Broadway musical actress and master teacher Carol Fox Prescott (Fiddler on the Roof, The Rothschilds, Pippin) and Rabbi Jonathan Kligler. We will be focusing on both classics and lesser-known songs from the American musical theater that speak deeply to the human condition. We will open our breath and expand our expressiveness with wonderfully effective vocal and acting exercises. We will enjoy a different kind of Shabbat service filled with popular songs that become our liturgy for the day. And in between we will explore the Jewish roots of Broadway. Open to all voices joy guaranteed!
This weekend falls during Chanukah, so we will be singing around the menorah. It will be a wonderfully festive way to celebrate the holiday!
Carol Fox Prescott is a walking encyclopedia of American musical theater. She and Rabbi Jonathan Kligler have been sharing their love for this music for many years, and now they are delighted to share it with you. Together they perform a concert called "There's a Place for Us: Jewish Songs and Spirit from the Broadway Stage", which is available on CD.
