Someone Who'll Watch Over Me by Frank McGuinness
An Irishman (Edward,) an Englishman (Michael) and an American (Adam,) exist in captivity after their unexplained kidnapping in Beirut, Lebanon, by anonymous antagonists. The play concerns the three men's tragic attempts to maintain their sanity during their ghastly ordeal from which little hope of escape exists. The captives, through dark humour and necessity, examine and attempt to overcome their differences on a nationalistic and personal level all the while under the watchful eyes of their captors and each other. As their captivity drags on and on, the men's rationalism gives way to absurdity, humour gives way to tragedy and hope turns to despair. Inspired by Irish journalist Brian Keenan's autobiographical account of his time in captivity in his book An Evil Cradling, McGuinness' play and its message remain relevant to this day.
