Women of Color Speak Out
Changing the Climate of Climate Change
Join us for a discussion and sharing of our personal stories from sHell No and our lifestyle as activists. This is an invitation to explore the complexities of activism as women of color and why it is critical that this movement is led by women of color. Seattle is the epicenter of environmental movement, the time has come for us all to join. We hope you will step into this conversation with us.

Panelists/Organizers:
Sarra Tekola is a environmental and social justice activist. She graduated from UW majoring in environmental science and conducted research on climate change in nine different labs and three different states but came to realize that climate change is a social-political problem. Since then she has been both pushing from within and outside of the system. She has worked for EPA, NOAA, Dept of Ecology and now works for City Council Mike O'Brien. She also has worked on the UW Divestment campaign, Shell No and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. In fall of 2016, she will begin her Ph.D in Sustainability at Arizona State University working on building independent climate-resilient communities.
Zarna Joshi is a writer and storyteller and has published books about Hindu spirituality, self-examination, and cross-cultural understanding. She leads the Seattle Bhakti Yoga group with an aim to focus on the core values of yoga. She is also a community organizer and world traveler and has appeared often appeared in the media as an activist for climate justice and social justice issues. Much of her activism stems from her cultural upbringing as an Indian daughter. She says: "I have a heritage of non-violent direct action. We changed the world for the better and we can do so again if we come together as a community."
Afrin Sopariwala was born and brought up in Mumbai, India and has lived in Seattle the last 5 years. She is a new activist, the ShellNo campaign has been her first taste of fighting for justice. "My life is forever changed", she says about her experience this summer. Afrin has previously worked for tech giants like Google, and comes from a deep personal exploration of spirituality and yoga which influence and fuel her drive to 'save humanity.' She teaches yoga, studies Ayurveda and enjoys blues dancing.
Yin Yu was born in Taiwan, grew up in Mukilteo and Edmonds on lands that nourished her. Yin aims to hold spaces that allows for connection and exploration into the complexity as human beings. A space where paradoxes and tensions can be held, heard and appreciated. As a whole system design graduate, she holds the high-level perspective in all her of work to seek system patterns and leverage points. She appreciates basketry, herbalism, and collecting stories from strangers.
Cascadia Climate Collaborative, a program of The Whidbey Institute, was born in 2013 to help build a more powerful and resilient climate movement: strengthening our connections by bringing climate leaders together in common conversation, deepening our commitments by addressing the difficult moral, emotional, and spiritual questions at the core of the work, and broadening our collaborations by bringing new constituencies into the movement.
