The class, taught by a Zen teacher with over 28 years of practice experience, will focus on the teachings of the Infinite Body as described in the Buddhist classic, the Diamond Sutra. The Sutra is a distillation of the Maha Prajna Paramita Sutra, which title can be translated into English as the "The Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra." We will primarily utilize the translation by Red Pine.
Chanted daily in thousands of monasteries, the Perfection of Wisdom is the primary teaching of emptiness for much of the Mahayana stream of Buddhism. The Diamond Sutra consists of 300 slokas (verses) that describe the state of infinite oneness of the world, and our conceptual and physical relationship to it.
This teaching can be understood to mean that those who take up the path of being of service to others, and freeing them from their suffering, should begin with the understanding that every being is an interconnected, impermanent being. Such an understanding begins with oneself and the willingness to relinquish one's view of separation from others.
The class will be held from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday nights beginning July 28th and ending September 15th. It is offered free of charge, by donation. This is an Ekan Zen Study Center class.
