Martin Smith, AIA, NCARB, LEED Green Assoc. and Michelle Cohn, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C from the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) will present on a range of licensure topics relevant to students, interns, supervisors, architects, and people in the architecture profession. The presentation will review the steps necessary to achieve licensure to become an architect and other programs to get the most out of your career in architecture.

Topics will include:
-Background of NCARB
-The entities involved in the licensure process
-How to progress successfully through the Intern Development Program (IDP)
-What to expect with the Architect Registration Examination (ARE)
-Recent changes to NCARB programs
-Value of the NCARB Certificate

Martin and Michelle will remain on-site after the presentation to help address specific questions on an individual basis.

MARTIN SMITH, AIA, NCARB, LEED Green Associate
Manager, Internship + Education, NCARB

Martin Smith's position with NCARB supports and guides the IDP program as it continues to evolve with the architecture profession.

Smith has 10 years of architectural design and construction management experience. He has worked for architectural firms in New York City and New Canaan, CT. His projects varied from single and multi-family residential projects to commercial and university buildings, with an expertise in adaptive re-use and historic preservation projects.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. He is licensed to practice architecture in the state of New York. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, has achieved the qualification of LEED Green Associate, and holds the NCARB Certificate for national reciprocity.


Michelle Cohn, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C
Manager, Examination Development, NCARB

Michelle joined NCARB in 2014 as a manager in examination development. Her work focuses on the development of ARE 5.0 and continued support of ARE 4.0, as well as outreach events. Prior to joining NCARB, Michelle worked as a project architect and project manager in several architecture firms in Washington, DC. Her work spanned multiple project types, including institutional, mixed-use, residential, and affordable housing across all phases of design and construction. Originally from the DC area, she left town temporarily to get her architecture degree at Tulane UniversityRoll Wave Roll!
