Bright New Boise at St. Mark's-in-the-Valley
The Elements Theatre Collective will close its 4th season, centered around the theme of Power and Influence, with a production of Samuel D. Hunter's play A Bright New Boise. This production is being lead by guest director Stephanie Farnum and features Rob Grayson, Katelyn Tustin, Jenna Scanlon, Blake Benlan, and Aaron Linker. A Bright New Boise will run from July 10th 26th at alternative venues around Santa Barbara.
In the break room of a Hobby Lobby craft store in Idaho, the congenial Will, a former member of a fundamentalist Evangelical church, starts his new employment with the company. He has come to Boise seeking a fresh start and the opportunity to connect with the son he gave up for adoption as an infant, who also works at the same Hobby Lobby. Will is determined to reunite with his son before the impending Rapture comes. On his mission he is confronted with the eccentric group of co-workers currently employed there. This well-crafted play offers a slice of life look at the minimum-wage working class and the challenges of faith and religion.
A Bright New Boise premiered off-Broadway in 2010 and was the recipient of the 2011 Obie Award for Playwriting and a 2011 Drama Desk nomination for Best Play. Playwright Samuel D. Hunter stated "There's just something really interesting about the idea of a break roomit's like this awkward meeting place for a bunch of people who ostensibly have nothing in common other than their place of work. It's all about the tension between the two major themes in the play: banality and divinity."
Elements Theatre Collective offers all of its productions free of cost to the public. Tickets to performances can be obtained at elementstc.org.
