Transformations on the Columbia: Contact, Colonization and Decolonization
Title: Transformations on the Columbia: Contact, Colonization and Decolonization Possible Time: August 30th from 10:00 AM 6:00 PM Field Sites: The Dalles Dam and Celilo Park Cost: $ 40 to 120 / person
In only two hundred years our region has gone through an immense transformation. The first contact with Europeans in the 17th or early 18th century was followed by mass migration in the 19th century that devastated Native communities and dispossessed them of their lands. These changes have transformed the landscape, our identities and our relationship to the land on which we live. Despite the enormity of the history that surrounds us it is poorly understood by many. Through a visit to The Dalles Dam and the site of Celilo Falls, considered the longest continually inhabited place in the Americas until inundated by the dam, we will experience these transformations and their impacts. In doing so we will be able to explore our identities, our responsibilities to colonization and what it might look like to begin a process of decolonization. This session engages these ideas as an introduction to a broader set of course offerings by Confluence and the Wapato Valley School.
