4-Hour Day Sail on Niagara
When Niagara is in her homeport of Erie, Pennsylvania, members of the general public can sign up to sail on-board. Typical day sails include 4 hours of sailing on Presque Isle Bay and/or the open lake, history lectures and demonstrations.
Niagara is owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and administered and operated by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with the assistance of the Flagship Niagara League, a 501(c)3 non-profit educational associate organization. She acts as a sailing ambassador and representative of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Niagara is inspected by the United States Coast Guard as a Sailing School Vessel(SSV). Sailing School Vessels may charge tuition for participation in education programs, but are prohibited from carrying passengers for hire. SSVs are built and certified to different regulations for design, construction, and safety standards than passenger vessels.
Sailing School Vessel Trainees (unlike passengers) learn a sailing related curriculum and are expected to be responsible and active participants in the sailing of the vessel. While the ship, completed in 1990, has modern auxiliary power, navigation, and life-saving equipment, the working of the ship and the living conditions on-board are authentic.
Cancellations and Refunds: Refunds* (*not including the service fee if booked online) will only be given in the event that the sail is canceled by management due to weather or maintenance problems (weather criterion for cancellation is actual or high probability of winds over 25 knots or severe thunderstorms). No refund will be given if at least two (2) hours were spent underway.
