Ukiah Symphony Presents: Broadway and Beyond! Randy Roberts LIVE!
Ukiah Symphony Fundraiser Broadway & Beyond with Randy Roberts Live By Karen Rifkin
Another summer night of music under the stars at Nelson Family Vineyards is fast approaching but this year's event will have a bit of a different twist: the Ukiah Symphony Orchestra will accompany female impersonator Randy Roberts, professional singer and entertainer, as he pays tribute to famous and infamous ladies of the stage and silver screen. With Roberts' two prior sold out performances at the School of Performing Arts and Cultural Educationone in 2011 and one in 2013conductor Les Pfutzenreuter knew it was time for him to perform with the symphony orchestra. "He's an incredible singer," he says, "with a true Broadway voice and presence." While the first half of the show will see Roberts performing as individual iconic women including Cher, Carol Channing and other chanteuses, the second half will feature the man behind the ladiesno wigs, no dresses, no make uppaying tribute to some of the great songs of the stage including those of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter, John Kander and Fred Ebb, Andrew Lloyd Weber and American Songbook standards. Willits resident Leslie Rich, an acting teacher, director and watercolor artist, says of her brother, "From the moment he walks onstage, Randy is in charge of his audience. He's at ease with a song, a dance or a joke. He's performed in Las Vegas, Honolulu, New York City, Atlantic City and throughout Europe and is currently headlining at the Crystal Room Cabaret in Key West, Florida. The fact that he's bilingual makes him a favorite in clubs in Puerto Rico and Spain. Randy is also an accomplished lyricist, an adept sound technician, a talented writer and a successful producer." Pfutzenreuter has received Roberts own scored orchestral arrangements ahead of time allowing the musicians the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the accompaniment prior to practicing with the entertainer and Roberts early arrival in the Ukiah area allows time for the collaborative rehearsals necessary to hone the performance. Ukiah Symphony Association board president Jean Stirling says she is delighted to have such a class act singer and entertainer as Randy Roberts performing at this year's fundraiser helping to support the organization's mission of maintaining a community-based orchestra of the highest quality possible serving the residents of Mendocino and surrounding counties and offering a full range of concerts, music education programs for young people and performance opportunities for musicians.
