Understanding Native Cultural Activities and Integrating with Treatment ~ Chemical Dependency Training Consortium of the Northwest
PeaceHealth Southwest Mill Plain Campus Health Education Center
Vancouver, WA
Share this event:

Goal of Training
The Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network (ATTC) identifies that Native American and Alaska Native populations today face a number of significant barriers to successful treatment engagement and retention, including differing sociocultural belief systems between the client and the counselor. This training will prepare participants for recognizing the cultural aspects and values of Native people as a population and as individuals receiving addiction treatment. Native traditional healing practices and cultural enhancement activities are both core and complementary interventions in promoting wellness and long-term recovery. These practices and activities are woven throughout behavioral health programs.
This training will present cultural and traditional healing practices and provide for a hands on activity.

This Core Training is most appropriate for participants who want a thorough, but introductory presentation of the topic. Training content relates to competency in the area of cultural diversity and group counseling. Culturally based curriculum that will be discussed includes:
Red Road to Wellbriety: In The Native American Way, White Bison
The Sacred Tree: Reflections on Native American Spirituality, Judie Bopp
Native American Journal: Strengthening the Spirit, The Change Companies

Behavioral Objectives
This training will provide participants with:
An understanding of Native Traditions and how to utilize the activities in treatment,
Identification of five useful healing activities,
Hands-on demonstration of traditional practices and cultural activities that may be incorporated into treatment, and
Methods of culturally based curriculum and its use in treatment.

Roy served for five years in the 1980s as the Native American representative on the Religious Advisory Committee for the Washington State Department of Corrections.
