"Something Old; Something New" Two Irish Wedding Plays
The Tinker's Wedding by John Millington Synge and Tying the Knot by Bridget Gethins and Keri Wormald

The Women's Mercury is back with a second series of readings in O'Toole's Back Room (4800 Forest Hill Avenue, RVA, 23225). The beautiful language of John Millington Synge is contrasted with a modern play, Tying the Knot, written by Women's Mercury co-founders Keri Wormald and Bridget Gethins.

In 1909, when The Tinker's Wedding was written, it was illegal for Catholic priests to say mass, let alone marry anyone in the British Isles, thanks to the British government. This included the modern day Republic of Ireland. Sarah Casey will go to any lengths to have a proper wedding and have it be performed by a priest.

In 2015, the Republic of Ireland mandated civil marriages be made legal for gay and lesbian couples, but is it a real wedding if your father won't walk you down the aisle because it's not a TRUE wedding unless it takes place in the TRUE church. Megan Sherry will go to any lengths to create her dream wedding.

Wayne "O'Ruotolo" will play in the restaurant during the dinner hour.
