Winter's Tale
Shakespeare's genre-bending spectacle tracing Time's inevitable cycle of loss and rebirth.
Though less commonly known than many of Shakespeare's earlier works, The Winter's Tale marks what might be called the Bard's most ambitious play in terms of the scope of its story, the variety of theatrical spectacle, and the attempt to find reconciliation and redemption in the wake of tyranny and tragedy.
The play's presentation and treatment of women and children in a world organized and ruled by men is at the heart of The Winter's Tale, raising difficult questions and providing a fantastic culmination with more than a little room for interpretation. Consdiering that four hundred years later we still live in a world where women and children suffer abuse and injustice at the hands of the men holding power over them--in every country on Earth, every single day--this play offers a mirror by which to view how far, or not, humanity has progressed.
