"The Old School Hip Hop Concert Series.." Featuring the Legendary Rakim!!!
The Long Beach Martin Luther King Center, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable tax-exempt organization serving children, individuals and families in the City of Long Beach, and greater Nassau County, N.Y. since 1998. The MLK Center is a grassroots community-based organization committed to develop innovative programming maintaining and improving the well-being of youth, adults, and seniors. The organization is dedicated to improving the educational attainment, health, human welfare, and opportunities for youth, adults, and families its serves. For over 40 years the total programming package of the MLK Center, Inc. has been a mixture of community activism, urban culture, and traditional cultural experiences of African-Americans, Hispanics, Caribbean and Asian immigrants that have become a growing part of the North Park Community, a politically and economically marginalized residential area in the City of Long Beach. However, in October, 2012 the agency was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Extensive structural damage to the facility drastically reduced programming, compounded with the loss of program supplies and equipment caused the agency a devastating setback. The MLK Center has since reopened and resumed programming, however there is still a long way to full recovery. It is imperative that fundraising efforts continue in a big way to raise the funds needed to fully restore programs and to replace lost equipment. The Benefit Concert, featuring Rakim is a positive step on the road to full recovery and beyond! Rakim, is an American rapper. One half of golden age hip hop duo Eric B. & Rakim, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential and most skilled MCs of all time. He grew up in Wyandanch, New York, and became involved in the New York hip hop scene at age 18. Eric B. brought him to Marley Marl's house to record "Eric B. Is President". Eric B. & Rakim's classic album "Paid in Full" was named the greatest hip hop album of all time by MTV in 2006, while Rakim himself was ranked #4 on MTV's list of the Greatest MCs of All Time. Steve Huey of Allmusic stated that "Rakim is near-universally acknowledged as one of the greatest MCs -- perhaps the greatest -- of all time within the hip-hop community. The editors of About.com ranked him #1 on their list of the 'Top 50 MCs of Our Time (1987-2007)'. Rakim began his career as the emcee of the rap duo Eric B. & Rakim, who in 2011 were nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2012, The Source ranked him #1 on their list of the 'Top 50 Lyricists of All Time.
