K-12 Teachers Clean Energy Workshop
Richland Community College will host the 2nd Annual K-12 Teachers Clean Energy Workshop at the National Sequestration Education Center (NSEC) on July 30, 2015. The workshop will consist of two sessions. In the morning session, experts in clean energy technologies will give 20 minute presentations, providing background information for teachers in areas of wind energy, solar energy, carbon capture and storage, biofuels, bioenergy, and clean coal. The afternoon session will consist of (1) an NSEC site tour, in which many of the above technologies are being demonstrated and (2) concurrent clean energy experiments/exhibits, providing teachers educational materials and classroom tested lesson plans, experiments, and activities to add to their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curricula.
We have developed an excellent list of speakers/exhibitors, including representatives from the U.S. Department of Energy, Archer Daniels Midland, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois State University, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, Richland Community College, and Decatur Public Schools. Exhibits include The Green Guide: A Curriculum of Global Sustainability and companion Teachers Tool Kit, SMASH Camp, Wind and Solar Exhibit, Biofuels STEM Modules, Prairie for Bioenergy, and Clean Energy Kit. The NSEC site tour includes wind turbines, solar arrays, carbon capture and storage project video tour, Sequestration Technology Education Learning Array (STELA), mobile biofuels laboratory, prairie vegetation walkway, and biomass heating systems. Richland Community College encourages K-12 teachers to schedule a follow up tour of the NSEC with their class where students will learn about a variety of renewable energy resources and sustainability practices at one location.
We hope to have high attendance from Illinois K-12 teachers in this knowledge sharing event. Teachers will receive 7 Professional Development Hours for attending the workshop.
Registration is free of charge and includes continental breakfast, lunch, and beverage service.
